The Cautious Optimist

You believe love is still possible. You also flinch a little when it gets close.

WHAT THIS MEANS

Both. At the same time.

That's the most honest place a person can be, and you're nearer to the good part than you've been letting yourself believe.

Most women live somewhere in this middle, and almost none of them say it out loud, because "I want it and I'm afraid of it" sounds like indecision. It isn't. It's an accurate description of what happens inside a body that has been hurt and still wants.

WHAT I WANT YOU TO KNOW

The work in front of you isn't convincing yourself.

You've already done that part. You believe it's still possible for you, which is genuinely further along than it feels from where you're standing.

What's left is teaching your body what your heart already decided.

The flinch is a physical event. It happens before you have a thought about it, which is exactly why deciding to be more open has never quite worked. You can't think your way out of a reflex. But a reflex can be retrained, and that is a far smaller project than the one you've been imagining.

You're closer to the good part than you've been letting yourself believe.

CLOSER THAN YOU THINK

The flinch is workable. That's the whole point.
